Historical Facts About Monteith / On December 9th, 1864, the battle of Monteith took place between the Union and the Confederates. Then the Union was led by General Sherman, who came into this area but was delayed in his attempt. The Confederates flooded the swamps to force the Union to walk through freezing swamp water because the Monteith swamp was a half a mile wide on either side, with the Confederates being overmatched in size, this strategy made it a little more difficult for the Union to flank their smaller army. The stalemate lasted around 4 hours slowing down the federals from seizing Savannah for at least another day.
